The Civil War Trust's Official Guide to the Civil War Discovery Trail, 3rd Edition has recently been revised and updated to include 4 new states and 94 new sites. The Trust, over 24,000 members strong, operates in conjunction with the Department of the Interior and its related agencies, including the American Battlefield Protection Program and the National Park Service, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and State Partners and Coordinators in over 30 states across America.

The goal of the Trust is to preserve our nation's Civil War battlefields, which are disappearing at an alarming rate. Of the 384 principal battlefields, 71 or (19%) have already been lost. Half the remainder is being threatened by development and in 10 years, we may lose fully two-thirds of them.
